Warlingham 2XV continued their preparations for the new season with a hard-fought 33-14 victory over Croydon RFC in an entertaining pre-season friendly, writes Matt Healey.

Croydon started brightly and enjoyed much of the early possession and territory, but Warlingham’s defence stood firm. A number of big tackles set the tone, with Roy Hart leading the way and Mark ‘Sparky’ Macaskill adding a trademark heavy hit. Despite being pinned back at times, Warlingham managed to clear their lines effectively and gradually worked their way into the game.

There were encouraging signs in attack, with strong carries from Captain Nick Hammond, Vice-Captain Joe Kelly and the forwards creating momentum. Nick Kewell and Matt Talboys combined well to spark a dangerous break, while Will Lau - making his first appearance in ten years after arriving just minutes before kick-off - quickly reminded everyone what they had been missing.

Croydon struck first with a breakaway score from a scrum, but Warlingham responded well. Sustained pressure eventually paid off when Manny Ademuyiwa powered over for the opening Warlingham try following a series of strong carries, including another influential contribution from Kelly.

The game continued at a high tempo. Hart produced a superb break that deserved more, while Alex Glover kept the crowd entertained with moments of flair and creativity. Kewell then crossed for a well-worked try after a sweeping move featuring an eye-catching run from Sparky, with Ademuyiwa providing enthusiastic support from the sidelines.

Warlingham’s defence remained impressive throughout. Jonah Clay put in several important tackles, while Nick Waterton produced an excellent relieving kick following a dangerous Croydon break. The scrum also became a real weapon, with Talboys and the pack earning praise for their dominance, supported by a tireless shift from number eight Rob Hoar.

Croydon showed plenty of attacking threat and scored a well-taken converted try down the right-hand side, but Warlingham responded immediately. A strong maul earned field position, and after sustained pressure near the line, Sparky crashed over for another score. Glover added the extras.

As the game wore on, Warlingham’s fitness and physicality began to tell. Hammond and Jonah combined well in the loose, while Kelly continued to make metres with powerful carries. One particularly memorable break from Kelly took play deep into Croydon territory and typified his influence on the match.

There were plenty of lighter moments too. Waterton bravely blocked a kick with his face, Scott Toomey’s afternoon included a mid-match boot change after an industrious hour on the field, and the touchline hydration service provided by Sam Jones received universal approval.

The closing stages saw more solid defensive work, including a crucial lineout steal and some uncompromising tackling, ensuring Croydon were unable to mount a comeback.

Overall, it was an encouraging pre-season outing for Warlingham 2XV. Strong defence, dominant set-piece work and a number of standout individual performances helped secure a deserved 33-14 victory and provided plenty of positives to take into the new campaign.
