Warlingham’s Colts gave higher level opposition a real test as their home campaign began with a narrow defeat in perfect rugby conditions at Hamsey Green, writes David Halliwell.

Despite slipping to an early deficit with two well taken Teddington/Welsh tries, the young Wars showed grit and skill to take the match to the visitors. Ably led by skipper Charlie Thompson at full-back, a well struck 50/22 kick and quick thinking from the resulting line out, saw effervescent scrum half Oli Shaw dive over for a great opportunist score. And when Shaw’s dangerous halfback partner Cooper Currie went over to score on the opposite flank after determined work from the Warlingham pack led by formidable hooker Declan Britton, the blue and whites were back in the game. Currie converted his own try and brilliantly kicked all his goals on the day.

The second half was a titanic tussle with fresh legs from both teams adding to an entertaining match in front of a large crowd in the autumn sunshine. Teddington Welsh ended up ahead at the final whistle but not without a real scare from the Warlingham lads who scored the try of the day. Second row James Hart, made a break right through the middle of visitors defence, beating five defenders with power and pace, before rounding the full back and diving over beneath the posts. A real highlight reel try for the lock, the young Wars were on top.

Not quite the win for Warlingham but so many positives for the season to come. The future looks bright for the club with another generation of proud players in the light blue and white hoops showing their pride in the badge. The club is hugely excited to see how the Colts progress this year.
