Wildcats Shine Bright Through Tough Conditions at All-Girls Minis Festival

Warlingham RFC29 Jan - 08:56

Rain, wind and mud couldn’t stop the smiles as Warly welcomed Locksheath and Battersea for a landmark morning of girls rugby.

Whilst rain put the brakes on Sunday training for all age group training, our plucky U9 Wildcats were able to find a playable enough patch of green to go ahead with their planned round robin festival as two visiting sides made their way to CR6. Here with his write up of the event is Minis Chair, Matt Whittle.

On a cold, wet and windy Sunday morning, our Minis section hosted their first ever all girls minis matches down at their Limpsfield Road HQ.

On a day that saw most other sporting fixtures in the local area fall foul to the weather and waterlogged pitches, Warlingham Wildcats U9’s welcomed Locksheath Pumas all the way up from the south coast (near Southampton) and Battersea Ironsides from central London.

It was the first time any minis all girl fixtures had been hosted at the club and it’s fair to say the girls put on quite the show! In a series of round robin matches, the Wildcats demonstrated some hard-hitting tackles, precise passing, darting runs and amazing support play, much to the delight of those watching in the tough conditions.

With rain beginning to fall heavily during the warmup, the girls from all three teams were in for a tough morning that would really test their character. But, in the mud, battling the rain and the wind, each team showed true grit and determination. Delivering high quality and competitive rugby, they all demonstrated the core values of rugby in abundance; Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportspersonship, or TREDS as it is more commonly known.

After the matches were completed, the girls had hot showers, thawed out and then enjoyed a team lunch where all three teams mingled and chatted about their fantastic morning of rugby

Coaching staff, parents and fans of all three clubs were extremely proud of the performances and attitude of all players involved.

The Wildcat U9’s are looking forward to welcoming both sides back again on 22nd March, along with teams from Dorking and Guildford, as part of a day to celebrate girls and woman’s rugby, when Warlingham Wildcats will host an alumni game and lunch. If you want to come down and witness some really high-quality minis rugby, played with smiles by these amazing young girls, then I suggest you head down to Limpsfield Road on 22nd March.
