Wars’ draw shows Colts quality and attitude

Farnham 26 - 26 Warlingham

A nail-biting finale saw Warlingham’s Colts claim a well earned draw with seconds left on the road at Farnham.

Moses Biatsu capped an excellent performance with a powerful try in the dying seconds with Harry Sturgess nervelessly nailing a challenging conversion levelled the scores on the final whistle. The Wars never gave up hope against a strong side and continued playing their high octane attacking style under pressure.

Tries from man of the match Jaylan Ryan-Coker, Lucas Kewell, Ollie Jackson alongside Biatsu’s late score with conversions from fly-half Sturgess told the story of a real titanic tussle.

Continuing their fine form in bright but brisk conditions in west Surrey, Warlingham were facing a familiar opponent who always provide a test. The two sides competed in the Quins cup final at Under 16 level last season with Warlingham coming out on top. So the stage was set for a classic of Surrey colts rugby.

Warlingham dominated the early stages and took an early lead with good tactical kicking giving the blue and whites excellent field position to stamp their quality on the match. Farnham battled back with the penalty count in their favour, converting 3 point chances regularly to keep the scoreline close in the opening stanza.

Defending desperately just before half time, resulted in 2 yellow cards for Warlingham for persistent offside in their own 22 as the team from east Surrey scrambled to stop the hosts. But with just 13 players starting after half time, Warlingham upped their game stringing together some brilliant interplay between backs and forwards resulting in 2 more tries and some clear air between them and the hosts on the scoreline.

The game swung again like a pendulum with Farnham finding touch with some excellent long kicks and dynamic play to convert their chances and seemingly snatch victory with a 7 point lead with 2 minutes to go. However Warlingham had other ideas and left their travelling supporters thrilled with their never say die attitude and quality over 80 minutes.

There is more to come from this group of players and their potential is exciting for all at the Hamsey Green club.
