Surrey XV, a combined squad representing U14 players from both Warlingham and Sutton & Epsom, travelled to Wimbledon for their Waterfall Cup fixture against a strong London Irish B side. The boys knew they were in for a challenge, and while the first half proved difficult, the second half showcased real character, resilience and teamwork, writes Assistant Head Coach Chris Short.

First Half

London Irish came out with pace, precision and physicality from the opening whistle. Their ability to move the ball quickly and exploit space out wide put Surrey XV under immediate pressure. Despite committed tackling and moments of strong defensive organisation, Irish were clinical in finishing their chances.

Most of the damage was done in this opening period. London Irish capitalised on turnovers, quick ruck ball and well-timed support lines to rack up the majority of their tries before the break. Surrey XV worked hard to slow the momentum, but the pressure was relentless and the scoreboard reflected it.

Even so, the boys never stopped competing. There were brave carries, determined kick chases and several phases of disciplined defence that prevented further scores.

Second Half

The second half was a completely different contest.

Surrey XV regrouped, tightened their structure and came out with far more aggression and belief. The defensive line was sharper, tackles were more dominant, and the boys began to win collisions they had lost earlier.

For long stretches, Surrey XV held London Irish out entirely. Their organisation around the breakdown improved dramatically, and the communication across the back line shut down space far more effectively.

In attack, Surrey XV started to build phases, carry with intent and challenge the Irish defence. Although they couldn’t quite turn pressure into points, the improvement was clear and impressive.

London Irish did eventually add to their tally, but unlike the first half, they had to work extremely hard for every metre.

A tough result, but a performance with real positives. Surrey XV showed heart, unity and resilience, especially in a second half where they genuinely held their own and matched London Irish physically and defensively.

The boys from Warlingham and Sutton & Epsom stood together, kept fighting and proved that when they settle into their structure, they can compete with anyone.

Plenty to learn from, and plenty to build on.
