Friendly game

Warly U14, first game of the 2014-15 long season ahead of us all !

Arrival bright and early of Old Reigatians and Warly U14 at 09.15am. We like punctuality ! ;-)
Good warm up thanks to Stephen and Duncan. Team picture thanks to Colin. Studs and equipment tuned up thanks to Barry and Stephen. Warly U14 team is in a good shape !

A few new players not yet aware of some move names but these are caught up before kick off. We start the game with 24 players on the sideline including some in trainers, crutches, etc... Excellent vocal support needed from the whole team !

Quick start with a new front row Abel, Barry, Aristot.
Second row is made of Olly R. and Luca.
Flankers Archie and Max
Number 8 Daniel D.
Back row: Ollie G. Alex, PJ, Ethan, Daniel A. Toby,
Full Back: Sam

Olly H. Aidan, Daniel S. Marek, Noah, Arian are supporting their mates and enter during the game with noticeable impact.

Good start with a hungry set of Warly forwards who duly clear the rucks. A try by our pacemaker Daniel A. quickly follows.
First set of scrums see the power this lot is able to deliver. Nonetheless scrum machine exercise are needed to create a clean "tower of power" as explained by Brian Maynard.
Warly adds points to the board thanks to Max, Aristot, Daniel A. Daniel D.
Excellent tackling, turnover balls and scrums power from the flankers
Warly front row is just ploughing the field with anger and the opposition front 8 is really hurting. Since Old Reigatians are good and experienced enough to see the issue of attacking in the centre of our line, they then move to the sides but even when our wingers do not stop a good overtaking move there is a Warly full back, centre or flanker covering defense available to keep the slate clean for 25 minutes.

First half finishes with a 22-0 score in our favour.

After a quick drink a talk from the coaches, the second half starts.
Legs are light again and we see Max evading a ruck to score amongst six Old Reigatians players. We also see Aristot rightly believing that always support follows his actions with a one handed blind back pass whilst being tackled at 3 meters from the the Old Reigatians try line. For once there was two Warly players in support!!! Daniel A. ends up with the oval leather in his hands to place the ball between the posts.
Abel who clears rucks like there is no tomorrow, feels his ribs are suddenly causing him a lot of pain, no worries Carol our experienced nurse is available. Aidan replaces him and also delivers a good number of tackles and carries the ball from a few good distances.
Warly second rows were on high energy bars, no doubt! Excellent forward carries from Olly R. and Luca allow for th game line to be broken in numerous occasions. Good ball presentation on the ground allows for the rucking party to protect the gain line.
Opposition is keeping the game open and does not hesitate to alternate attacking sides. Their 8-9-10-11 backbone is very quick and agile with their hands.
Replacements are coming at Props, flankers, scrum half, fly half and wingers and all seem eager to keep the ball alive.
A few more tries follow thanks to the opposition line being broken in front of the outside centre or winger due to one or two extra Warly player in quick support.

Very good referring from Old Reigatians and the game finishes with the following score:
Warlingham U14 54 - Old Reigatians U14 0

Performance recap:

*Good points mentioned by the coaching team:
Front row consistent during the whole game
Second row: More distance covered like this ! Good catches on kick off and line outs.
Number 8: Solid performance from both
Scrum Half: Both had a good reading of the scrums
Fly - Half: Good ball despatch
Centres: Some nice straight lines, more like this please...
Wings: Marek, Arian, Noah: Good efforts and willingness to cause issues in the opposition
Full Back: good support in defense and decisive line breaking runs.

*To be worked upon very soon
Scrum power has got to come from 8 players in an organised manner
Lineout calls and delivery will be worked upon
Too many players in the rucks starves the scrum-half of attacking options...
Second rows: Carry the ball with TWO hands !
Number 8: No directions given to the scrum.
Scrum half: Where were the pods calls ?
Fly-Half: Where were the calls worked upon during training ?
Fly-Half & Centres: How long for the ball to make it to the wing ? it should be seconds not minutes.
Wingers: Get the ball to cover the distance, not your legs !
Kicking practice necessary to cover in case of a soon-to-come tight(er) game.

A solid first performance for some Warly U14 in front of a "not too challenging" but brave opposition. A lot remains to be seriously revised before the next game in 2 weeks!
