On Saturday 9th May, Minis and Juniors from across the age groups gathered in Warlingham village to take part in the annual ceremony to crown this year’s Warlingham May Queen.

The event began with a marching parade through the village, led by a pipe band and the May Queen entourage, followed by local clubs and community groups including a cheerleading team, a circus skills troupe and Warlingham Rugby Club.

Cheers and whoops from the pub beer gardens around the Green greeted our young players as the familiar blue and white hoops brought plenty of colour and energy to the march. Whistles and voices were in fine form too, with chants of “Warly, Warly, Warly - Oi, Oi, Oi!” filling the air and giving the marching band some serious competition in the volume stakes.

On arrival at a busy Warlingham Green, onlookers were treated to a traditional Morris Men dance in honour of the new May Queen, along with separate performances from the cheerleading team and circus skills group.

It was a brilliant day to be out in the sunshine, raising the club’s profile and reminding locals that a welcoming rugby club is just up the road, offering rugby for near-enough everyone. A huge thank you to all the players, parents and coaches who joined the parade and represented the club so brilliantly.

With the season now over, attention turns to welcoming new players, young and old, into the club. Community occasions like this are a great way to keep Warlingham RFC visible, approachable and connected locally.
