As we happened to look back through the club archives this week, a team photograph from the 1959/60 season brought a familiar face back into focus - that of Barry Reid. Barry was a First XV player during that era, and seeing him in the line-up once again offers a timely reminder of his long and valued association with Warlingham RFC.
Barry joined the club as a young man in the 1950s and remained connected to Warlingham throughout his life. In later years he became a loyal supporter, regularly attending club lunches and joining the annual Christmas gathering in London. His easy manner, enduring enthusiasm and affection for the club made him a welcome presence at every event.
A funeral service for Barry was held recently in Westerham. Warlingham RFC was represented by Derek Child, David Toye, Pete York, Paul Lunn, Dennis Robson and Tony Law, who attended in their club blazers to pay their respects on behalf of the wider membership.
Many will also know Barry as the father of broadcaster Susanna Reid, whose work on BBC Breakfast and Good Morning Britain made her a familiar face to millions.
As we share this rediscovered photograph from our history, we remember Barry not only as a teammate and supporter, but as a lasting part of Warlingham RFC’s story. We extend our sincere condolences to Susanna and the Reid family.
